In the 18th century, it was suggested that the Valentine's Day was instituted on February 14 to replace the old Lupercalia, a Roman (and possibly even older) fertility festival.
Legends of Valentine appear in the Legenda aurea, but the Valentine's Day of romantic love, as celebrated today, owes its origin to Geoffrey Chaucer, who wrote these lines in his poem Parliament of Fowls (1380-1382)
